About this book
The Pirates' Who's Who gives particulars of the lives and deaths of pirates and buccaneers, by Philip Gosse, originally published in 1924. The dedication is to the author's fellow members of the Fountain Club, with the hope that nothing in the book may incite them to emulate its heroes.
The entries are headed by surname and first name, with short notes on crews, ships, dates and places: Captain James of Jamaica and Tortuga, for example, commanded a frigate in 1663, and Nathaniel Jackson is listed among Captain Edward Teach's crew. One passage on flags says Captain Bartholomew Roberts flew several designs of his own, including a figure holding a glass of punch. Another, on discipline, says crews could choose a new commander, and one ship had elected thirteen in a few months.
