About this book

A nurse's promise to stay beside an orphaned child leads into the unsettling world of an old family house. In the opening tale, Rosamond and her young nurse leave a Westmoreland parsonage for Furnivall Manor, where the grand rooms and neglected grounds make their arrival feel lonely rather than welcoming. The nurse tells the story to Rosamond's children, giving the account a personal voice shaped by affection, memory and close attention to the household.

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell's collection brings together five strange tales, including The Poor Clare, Lois the Witch and The Grey Woman. In the passage from Lois the Witch, a young woman resists a cousin's claim that they must marry, while her aunt treats her wishes as secondary to his needs. Readers interested in horror stories with family tensions can find both imposing surroundings and the unease of being dependent on people who hold power over others.
