About this book
The Prairie Mother by Arthur Stringer is divided by day headings, such as Sunday the Fifteenth and Thursday the Thirty-first. A speaker under the heading Sunday the Fifteenth opens her eyes on a pea-green world and hears a doctor say "Give ’er another whiff or two."
The speaker addresses herself as Tabbie McKail and says Casa Grande looked such a little dot on the wilderness. The speaker has her babies to bring up away out here on the edge of this half-settled no-man’s land. Old Whinstane Sandy, the hired man, presents a hand-made swing-box for Poppsy and Pee-Wee. The speaker writes that "In one generation, almost, we are making a home-land out of a wilderness." A paper's page labeled "Woman’s Page" carries a photograph of the fair Lady Allie in aviation togs under a head-line reading "Insists On Tea Above The Clouds."
