About this book

Eight-year-old Jim Hartigan wants to prove himself in the stable yard of his mother's Ontario hotel. In the summer of 1866, he climbs onto a young colt before an amused crowd, revealing both his skill with horses and his appetite for attention. Ernest Thompson Seton places this opening amid sawmills, pine clearings and rough roads, then builds a Western novel around the shaping of Jim's powerful temperament.

The Great Plains setting brings preaching into close contact with life in the saddle. In a later scene, Jim urges Blazing Star into a race with antelope while Belle watches; when a hotel fire threatens the horse's stable, he rushes to bring him to safety. Horses are a source of excitement, attachment and responsibility here. Readers interested in frontier communities and the tension between personal passion and religious duty will find those concerns expressed through a distinctly physical, restless character.
