About this book
Monsieur de Pourceaugnac is by Molière, in a translation into English prose with a short introduction and explanatory notes by Charles Heron Wall. The book says that the work, acted on October 6, 1669, is nothing but a farce, and that Molière excels in farce as well as in higher comedy. The list of persons represented includes Mr. de Pourceaugnac, Oronte, father to Julia, Éraste, lover to Julia, and Sbrigani, a Neapolitan adventurer.
The book also says that the attacks upon the doctors of the time are not exaggerated. A speaker asks whether those plotting together will succeed in breaking off the marriage which a father has taken into his head, and another answers that they are doing all they can and have many schemes ready. One speaker says there is to be no other husband than Mr. de Pourceaugnac, another insists on a marriage to Éraste at once, and the reply is “No; I will not.”
