About this book
The Prodigal Returns is a book by Lilian Staveley, whose title page names her as author of The Golden Fountain and The Romance of the Soul. The contents list parts from Part I to Part V. A first-person memory recalls the face and neck and bosom of the nurse upon whose heart the speaker lay, and her voice telling the speaker that she must leave, that they must part.
The narrator says that at seventeen the lessons came to an end and that, although not much had been learnt, four languages could be spoken with great fluency. The narrator states, "I am not demented. I never was so sane, so capable in my life as now." A passage says that life in this world is a life for spiritual weaklings.
