About this book
Upton Sinclair examines religious institutions through the money and authority they command. Published in 1917, this essay opens with a satirical scene in which worshippers strain to lift themselves by their bootstraps while other figures collect their wealth. The image establishes his argument that spiritual promises can serve material interests, and the contents extend that argument across churches, commercial movements and claims of supernatural power.
Historical examples give the criticism a political edge. Sinclair connects the Lutheran Reformation and the Prussian state with obedience, military discipline and the restriction of popular freedom. His voice is argumentative, using quotations and sharp comparisons to challenge alliances between religious leaders and established power. Readers interested in economics, religious controversy or the history of social criticism can examine how he builds his case and where he places responsibility.
