About this book

A storm gathers as the tug Uncas leaves Key West for the blockade off Cuba, and naval cadet Clifford Faraday is impatient to reach the action. Serving under Lieutenant Raymond, he watches the sea for unfamiliar vessels while remembering Ignacio, a spy whose earlier plans he has frustrated. A distant trail of smoke soon turns the rough crossing into a chase. This opening sets the pace for an adventure built around naval duty, pursuit and danger ashore.

Published in 1898 under the name Ensign Clark Fitch, Upton Sinclair's novel uses the Spanish-American War as its setting. The contents point to boarding attempts, captivity in Morro Castle and hazardous missions. Its personal stakes include Clif's attachment to Bessie Stuart and the difficult choices faced by a Spanish officer who cares for her. Readers interested in early naval adventure fiction will find a young officer's eagerness tested against divided loyalties and acts of generosity across enemy lines.
