About this book
Special Talents and Defects: Their Significance for Education is by Leta Stetter Hollingworth. The text reports that Uhl studied a boy who could not subtract, according to standard tests, and that analysis showed he could subtract only by multiplying. The text says the problem of individual examination is to find out what habits have not been formed, and the problem of pedagogy is to teach those habits, and to motivate the child.
A passage in the text states the belief, in these times, that the school should to the fullest extent provide opportunities for each pupil to develop his talents as completely and as rapidly as possible. The text describes the formation of a series of connections approximately as follows, the first being that an object, act, quality, or relation is bound to a certain sound.
