About this book
Leo Markun's The Psychology of the Criminal begins under the heading The Nature of the Problem. He defines a criminal as a person who has committed a crime, whether or not he is known as such, and quotes Austin and Stephen on a crime as an act or omission that the law punishes. His first examples are small ones, such as spitting on the floor or driving an automobile faster than the speed limit. He asks why motorists exceed the limit and turns to a group of college boys celebrating a football victory.
In another passage he gives a short life of Cesare Lombroso, an Italian who wrote an essay on insanity and genius while still a student of medicine and served as a military surgeon in the Austro-Italian War, and who held that there is a class of born criminals. Elsewhere the text reports intelligence tests given to delinquent children and adults, and Pinter's doubts about how the scales were built.
