About this book
Leo Markun's introduction begins with the point that differences in the formation of the human hand are so great that they are used for identification, fingertips above all. He notes that physiognomy, the study of character from the face, is also very old, and names Lavater. He states that there is no good reason to suppose the formation of the hand can tell us anything about character, and he traces the arrangement of modern teaching to Hartlieb in the fifteenth century and d'Arpentigny in the middle of the nineteenth.
The later pages report what palmists claim: a single line on one of the mounts is a sign of success, a cross forecasts a happy marriage, and a red, black or blue dot is an unfortunate token. A passage on health lists signs that palmists link to scarlet fever, typhoid fever and rheumatism.
