About this book
The Psychology of the Emotions is by Th. Ribot, whose title page gives him as Professor at the College of France. The pages sampled combine general statements with named authorities. One passage divides character into types, the sensitive and the active, and cites Bain on the purely emotional character, saying it alternates between impetuous energy and sudden collapse, naming Jean Paul Richter, Mozart and Rousseau as artists of that kind.
Another passage takes up the expression of feeling in the face. It describes Wundt on the mimicry of the mouth in tasting sweet, acid or bitter substances, and notes that sweet joy, bitter grief and sharp reproaches bring back the same expression. Mantegazza's phrase 'mimic synonyms' appears there. A further passage traces the aesthetic feeling for nature, saying that in primitive poetry man occupies the foreground and nature is only an accessory, and turning to the Greeks.
