About this book
Théodule Ribot, professor at the Collège de France, traces how the mind learns to abstract and to generalise. He sets out three periods: abstraction before speech, abstraction aided by words, and a final stage in which words alone fill consciousness. The method is strictly psychological, leaving logic and the theory of knowledge aside, and the evidence comes from animals, children and deaf-mutes, and from the growth of languages and the records of early peoples. Frances A. Welby made the authorised English translation.
