About this book
A. K. H. Boyd's The Recreations of a Country Parson, Second Series, was printed at Boston in 1862. Its fourteen chapters are titled mostly with the word Concerning: the parson's choice between town and country, disappointment and success, churchyards, summer days, screws, solitary days, Glasgow down the water, friends in council, the pulpit in Scotland and future tears. One chapter is called Life at the Water-Cure, and the last is a conclusion.
In one passage the author discusses his chosen title of Disappointment and Success, remarking that the two words are not strict opposites, since failure is the thing and disappointment the feeling it causes. He writes of people who always win and others who always lose, and recalls Sydney Smith lying on his deathbed. A later passage notes that excellence in one department may leave other faculties undeveloped.
