About this book

The Altar Steps is by Compton MacKenzie, the prelude to The Parson's Progress. The contents list chapters titled The Bishop's Shadow, The Lima Street Mission, Religious Education, Husband and Wife, Palm Sunday, The Drunken Priest and The Altar for the Dead. A character named Mark says he thinks he likes Jesus better than God and that he cannot understand the Holy Trinity, and Mrs. Lidderdale answers that nobody can understand the Holy Trinity, which she calls a great mystery.

A speaker explains why they wanted to hold a special confirmation for two boys they are emigrating, and says the Bishop has no objection to a special confirmation being held by the Bishop of Matabeleland when he comes to stay next week. Mark says he feels perfectly convinced that he wants to be a priest, and a reply says the speaker had doubts about him when he first came but that he seems to possess a real fixity of purpose.
