About this book

The Robbers is Friedrich Schiller's play. Its contents list Schiller's preface, an advertisement to the play, a preface to the second edition and then the acts, with scenes in a tavern on the frontier of Saxony, in Moor's castle and Amelia's chamber, in Old Moor's bedchamber, in the Bohemian woods and in country near the Danube. A passage before the preface to the second edition says the Robber Moor is a man to pity and hate, abhor yet love, and the play also shows a fond, weak, over-indulgent father and the sorrows of too enthusiastic love. The preface to the second edition says the eight hundred copies of the first were exhausted.

In the dialogue sampled, Father Dom hands Schweitzer a general pardon fully signed, and Charles tells the doubters to look at it. In another passage, Old Moor speaks of going to a son with tears and of crying 'I have sinned against heaven and before thee', and Charles asks whether the other son was very dear to him.

Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, playwright, and historian, and with Goethe a founder of Weimar classicism. His dramas of freedom and moral struggle, and his Ode to Joy set to music by Beethoven, made him one of the most beloved writers in the German language.
