About this book
The Roman History of Ammianus Marcellinus covers the reigns of the Emperors Constantius, Julian, Jovianus, Valentinian and Valens, in the translation of C. D. Yonge, with a general index, London, 1911. The preface says that little is known of Ammianus beyond what his own history shows: he was a native of Antioch and a soldier.
In one passage men named Epigonius and Eusebius are sought, Apollinaris is sent to Mesopotamia and later brought back to Antioch and kept in close confinement, and a royal robe is found at Tyre. In another, the writer says Julian wished never to stray from what is right and let his prefects and chosen counsellors check his impulses, and that he was vexed when he made mistakes. A further passage describes the habits of a people who go on until they reach the Alani.
