About this book
The Roman Wall by J. Collingwood Bruce examines inscriptions that bear Hadrian's name and records stones found along the Wall. The account describes a stone discovered in the foundations of the castellum at Milking-gap, bearing the emperor's name and that of his legate Aulus Platorius Nepos. A stone found at Chapel-house, in an outhouse probably occupying a castellum's site, mentions Hadrian and the twentieth legion.
The description places the Wall's crossing of the Ouse-burn very near an ancient bridge south of the railway viaduct. The account acknowledges that the Wall cannot be traced with minute accuracy through Newcastle. The description of Corchester records abundant medals, inscriptions, and other Roman antiquities, with pieces of bricks and pots spread across the ground.
