About this book

The Romantic Adventures of a Milkmaid is a story whose teller names a land-surveyor as the authority for the particulars. The scene is half-past four o’clock on a May morning in the eighteen forties, with a dense white fog hanging over the Valley of the Exe. Margery sees a man’s elbow projecting over the edge, and he remains quite still while Margery grows impatient.

A fine-framed dark-mustachioed gentleman, in dressing-gown and slippers, is sitting there in the damp without a hat on, tightly grasping his forehead with one hand. A man says his last request to Margery is that if he sends for her again, she does not come. The Baron’s coachman shouts, but Jim stands firm.
