The Second Chance

The Second Chance is a book by Nellie L. McClung. An epigraph credited to Jeremiah xviii, 3-4 speaks of a vessel made of clay that was marred in the hand of the potter, so that he made it again another vessel as seemed good to the potter to make it. The contents list names chapters such as Martha, The Rising Watsons and At the Chicken Hill School, among others.

A long pasteboard box, neatly tied with wine-coloured ribbon, is handed in with the name Miss P. Watson on it, and holds a dress length of the softest, springiest silk, yards of silk braid and of cream net, and sparkling buttons and spools of thread. Under the heading The End of the Game, Pearl gets her four lively young charges settled down, searches the line of spectators for Libby Anne and Mrs. Cavers, and becomes more and more troubled when they are nowhere to be seen. A scene shows a boy whose mind was busy with the thought that the Saviour of men had been betrayed by a friend, betrayed to his death, and had died blessing and forgiving his enemies.
