About this book

Returning to a stone quarrying community beside the English Channel, Jocelyn Pierston finds that familiar places and relationships look different after years in cities. Thomas Hardy's novel opens with the young sculptor calling on the Caro family, where Avice's affectionate greeting becomes an awkward encounter over manners and growing up. The peninsula's steep roads, limestone houses and working quarries give this personal scene a sharply defined setting.

Hardy frames the story as an exploration of an imaginative temperament, with sections following its central figure at twenty, forty and sixty. Pierston questions another Avice about her attachment to a young man and struggles with his own expectations. The interest lies in how memory, artistic ideals and affection alter his view of other people. Readers drawn to psychological fiction can follow that tension alongside Hardy's account of a small coastal community.
