About this book
Daniel Gregory Mason's The Romantic Composers carries portraits of Robert Schumann, from a water color made in Vienna in his youth, and of Franz Schubert, from an original water color by W. A. Rieder. A footnote explains that a sonata, a fugue and a nocturne differ in structure, while a good melody and a bad one differ in form.
In one passage Mason calls the songs in which Schubert illustrates incidents, such as The Erl-King and The Wanderer, intrinsically inferior to his songs of emotional mood, and he quotes A. B. Bach's book The Art Ballad on Die Allmacht. Another passage likens a composer's Polonaise-Fantaisie to a page from Tristan, his fourth ballade to Tschaikowsky and his twenty-first mazurka to César Franck. A further passage names Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn.
