About this book
The Ruins, or Meditation on the Revolutions of Empires: and the Law of Nature, is by C. F. Volney, in an 1890 New York edition. The title page adds Volney's Answer to Dr. Priestley, a biographical notice by Count Daru and the zodiacal signs and constellations by the editor. It carries Volney's line about cherishing the love of man and building his own happiness on promoting his.
One passage describes a man in Corsica buying a considerable estate and trying the sugar-cane, cotton, indigo and coffee, and being appointed director of agriculture and commerce on the island. Another passage speaks to the faiths of different peoples, saying that beneath their differences lies a common groundwork, so that each claims to be the original and accuses the others of plagiarism.
