About this book
The Rural Life of England is by William Howitt, who is named as the author of the “Book of the Seasons”. The volume is inscribed to Thomas and Phebe Howitt, of Heanor, in the county of Derby, addressed as “My dear Parents”.
The text says that in the county being described were born the bishops Hurd and Newton and the antiquary and herald Elias Ashmole. The text names Izaak Walton, a lover of the fields, who used by that Dove to stroll and meditate, or converse with his friend Charles Cotton. A passage describes a basin surrounded by a hedge of honeysuckle that had doubtless once possessed the life and beauty of a fountain and now showed only black, stagnant water covered with masses of yellow moss. The text describes some who have been planning day after day where they shall go on Sunday, with visions of a neat country alehouse.
