About this book
The Sacred Tree is identified on its title page as the second part of The Tale of Genji. The narrative describes Genji recovering some equanimity in comfortable lodgings and beginning to write letters to his friends at the Capital. An answer to Murasaki's letter remains unfinished during a melancholy stay at Suma because the writer's tears keep forcing him to put the letter aside.
The Lady of Akashi is determined that any renewal of contact must occur in a place where she will not face humiliating contact with her rivals. Koremitsu reports that the proposed house occupies an agreeable situation somehow reminiscent of the seaside. A woman's fear of having her secret discovered leads her to treat Genji with exaggerated indifference, despite her longing for his sympathy and love.
