About this book
The Hawaiian Romance Of Laieikawai is presented with an introduction and translation. The preface says that the translation was undertaken out of love for the land of Hawaii and the Hawaiian people, and thanks those who have helped the study.
The explanatory discussion describes a Polynesian invoking the spirit of a dead ancestor as a supernatural helper, whose strength may be increased through prayer and sacrifice. The note on konane describes a board of stone or wood with depressions of no definite number, arranged ordinarily at right angles. The description of the game specifies beach pebbles as pieces, with coral for white and lava for black, and gives victory to the color remaining longest on the board.
