About this book
The Pillow-Book of Sei Shōnagon is translated by Arthur Waley and was first published in 1928. The preliminary notes say the translator has rendered about a quarter of the Pillow-Book, leaving out passages where the original was dull, unintelligible, repetitive or packed with allusion. One passage describes the Heian period, saying religious ceremonies were much in vogue and that the real religion of Heian was the cult of calligraphy.
In another passage a lady, cross with her lover, leaves his side for another couch. It is a very cold night, she has only an unlined wrap, and she begins to hear strange noises in the women's quarters and outside. The volume also carries notices of other translations and of The Nō Plays of Japan.
