About this book
The Satires, Epistles, and Art of Poetry of Horace is translated into English verse by John Conington, Corpus Professor of Latin in the University of Oxford. The preface speaks of venturing to follow up a translation of the Odes of Horace by a version of the Satires and Epistles. The text says all translation, as has been pointed out over and over again, must proceed more or less on the principle of compensation.
A verse passage says a lamprey now appears, a sprawling fish, with shrimps about it swimming in the dish. A verse passage advises that if some day you should take courage and compose a lay, you entrust it first to Maecius' critic ears, your sire's and mine, and keep it back nine years. A verse passage says he who knows nought of verses needs must try to write them ne'ertheless.
