About this book
The Poems and Fragments of Catullus, by Gaius Valerius Catullus, is translated in the metres of the original by Robinson Ellis. The preface says the idea of translating Catullus in the original metres adopted by the poet himself was suggested to the writer many years ago. The preface says that in 1868, the year following the publication of the writer's larger critical edition of Catullus, the writer again took up the experiment.
The text introduces some stanzas as from a Sapphic ode into which Webbe translated the fourth Eclogue of Spenser's Sheepheardes Calendar. A translated poem has Cybele, the thong relaxing from a lion-haled yoke, and a lion that spurs his heart to a fury. A set of notes on individual poems gives a version of lines including I watch thy grace; and in its place My heart a charmed slumber keeps, While I muse upon thy face.
