About this book

The Sea Fogs is by Robert Louis Stevenson, with an introduction by Thomas Rutherford Bacon. The introduction says that Stevenson first came to California in 1879 for the purpose of getting married. The introduction says the sea fogs beset a large part of the California coast, and are poisonous to anyone afflicted with pulmonary weakness but bracing and glorious to others.

A first-person account in the text says that Napa Valley was gone, and that in its place, not a thousand feet below the speaker, rolled a great level ocean. The account adds that the speaker had seen these inundations from below at Calistoga, coughing and sneezing under fathoms on fathoms of gray sea vapour. The narrator says that by half-past one all that world of sea fogs was utterly routed and flying here and there into the south in little rags of cloud.
