About this book

The book places its scene on a high mountain, while acknowledging that many mountains are higher and many have a nobler outline. The description of Napa Valley places Calistoga at the railroad's terminus, where travellers going farther must cross the mountain spurs by stage. The account of Calistoga describes a wide street with bright, clean, low houses, occasional verandahs and horse-posts, and townsfolk lounging along it.

The account of a night's lodging describes rough bunks filled with hay and faint starshine entering through an open door and window. The narrator describes rattlesnakes buzzing among the bushes and a snake habitually occupying the wood-pile, sometimes raising its head when firewood was collected.
