About this book

Edinburgh, by Robert Louis Stevenson, presents Picturesque Notes on a city overlooking a windy estuary from the slope and summit of three hills. The introductory description takes in the May lighthouse to the east at sunset and the first snows on Ben Ledi to the west, beyond the carse of Stirling. The street account describes the University bell ringing every hour and students coming and going through deep archways.

The account of a farm traces its beginnings to a grange of Whitekirk Abbey, tilled and inhabited by friars. The farm's hospitality during the covenanting troubles includes open doors till morning and a dresser laden with cheese, bannocks, milk and brandy when a night conventicle meets on the Pentlands.
