About this book

The Waif Woman is by Robert Louis Stevenson. The text calls itself a tale of Iceland, the isle of stories, and of a thing that befell in the year of the coming there of Christianity. In the spring of that year a ship sails from the South Isles to traffic and falls becalmed inside Snowfellness.

Aud, the wife of Finnward, who was well-to-do and kept open house, is not so much considered, and her mind is set on trifles, on bright clothing, and the admiration of men. Men came to the house from sea and told of a waif woman, called Thorgunna, who had chests of clothes beyond comparison, and at the hearing of it Aud’s eyes began to glisten. A woman who thinks she is passing hears the voice of Thorgunna say that the things are for no use but to be shown, and ask Aud, Aud, have you shown them once?
