About this book
This edition appeared in 1893 as a careful reproduction of a book printed in 1815 from a manuscript of 1691 by Rev. Robert Kirk, with an introduction and notes added by Andrew Lang. The essay concerns the nature and actions of the subterranean and, for the most part, invisible people known among the Low-Country Scots as elves, fauns and fairies. Old spelling is left unchanged.
One passage describes a Co-walker, a double that resembles a man like a twin brother and is said to be seen before and after the original dies. Another says a great eater has an elf attending him, a Joint-eater, that feeds on the essence of the food. The notes at the back turn to children and knocking sounds at seances, citing Professor Barrett and a girl in Galashiels.
