About this book

A newspaper office in a colonial city provides the first setting for Joseph Conrad's four tales, published together in 1915. Geoffrey Renouard, an explorer now growing silk plants on Malata, talks with an editor who has supported his ventures. A dinner invitation has left Renouard puzzled, and his questions about the guests give their conversation an uneasy direction. His long spell of island solitude also shapes the way he studies the faces around him.

Elsewhere, the collection turns to the business of ships. A passage about the Sagamore connects a new mate's interference with an anchor cable to news of a vessel driven ashore. The account arrives through a speaker whose interruptions and sharp replies make the telling part of the drama. These stories offer readers interested in motives and unreliable appearances a close view of how friendship, commercial interests and private suspicions work upon one another.

Joseph Conrad

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English, though it was his third language. His works probe moral isolation, colonialism, and the darkness within.
