About this book

The Servant Problem is by Robert F. Young, and a line under the title says selling a whole town, and doing it inconspicuously, can be a little difficult. The Francis Pfleuger in question lived in a small town named Valleyview, and suffered the distinction of being both the village idiot and the village inventor. Francis thought that a machine capable of tying knots would be pretty keen, so he carried the box into the kitchen and set to work, following directions for assembling a multiple Möbius-knot dynamo. All of the residents of Valleyview heard whining sounds on their back doorsteps.

Philip Myles drives carefully into the village of Valleyview, past a sign asking drivers to drive carefully because they are fond of their dogs. The village of Valleyview has not turned on so much as a single streetlight, and all is in darkness with not a soul to be seen. Philip looks up at the sky and finds it wrong somehow, with Cassiopeia changed in position and Orion awry.
