About this book

John Roussel's The Silver Lining is subtitled A Guernsey Story and is dated 1894. Its index lists chapters such as The Results of Disobedience, A Little Girl's Change of Life, The Boarding School, Superstition, Dark Days, Love Triumphs, Reconciliation and Domestic Happiness.

In one passage a character named Frank runs along a road after a pig surprises him and picks up bruises and cuts, and he later watches men through a gap in the hedge plunge the animal into a tub of steaming water and scrape it with ormer shells. In another, old Pierre tells Frank about the feu bellanger, which he says dislikes sharpened tools, and describes how he and his brother set a sharp knife in the ground, blade up, at a place where they had seen the creature. A further passage has a daughter tell her father that she wants to make him happy once more.
