About this book

The Tailor of Gloucester is by Beatrix Potter, author of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. A short note dated Christmas 1901 is addressed to Freda, who is fond of fairy-tales and has been ill. The story is set in the time of swords and periwigs, when a poor old tailor sits cross-legged on a table in the window of a little shop in Westgate Street.

The tailor is making a coat of cherry-coloured corded silk embroidered with pansies and roses, and a cream satin waistcoat, for the Mayor of Gloucester. A cat named Simpkin hunts through the kitchen at night. In one passage the tailor lies ill with a fever and mumbles No more twist in his sleep, while the cut-out silk and satin wait on the table with one-and-twenty button-holes. A scrap of paper pinned where one button-hole is missing carries the same words in tiny writing.
