About this book
Yr Ynys Unyg, or The Lonely Island, is subtitled A Narrative for Young People and is dated 1852. The title page carries a quotation from Shakespeare's Tempest about escape and sorrow, and the book has an introduction and numbered chapters running to at least XLIII.
In one passage a narrator addressed as Madam describes a storm at sea, with waves like grey mountains, and the captain asks whether it is not "a pretty sea." Gatty and Sybil then talk about the wave, and Gatty scolds Sybil for trembling. Another passage speaks to mourners after a death in a family and turns to comfort in a better world. In Chapter XLIII a captain puzzles over what the pirates are doing through the night, and at first light a pirate captain comes with a flag.
