About this book
The subtitle calls the book The Story of a South African Girl. The story shows Poppy Destin, aged nine, washing a pile of dirty plates at the kitchen table. Poppy loved music but was not allowed to learn it, and Aunt Lena said she couldn't afford those frills for Poppy.
A yellow sheet on the news-boards of a paper shop stood out boldly with the words South Africa in black letters across it. Theobald's Row is described as a hateful street that smells of fish and rank cheese, where men bawl out the price of pork-chops. Southampton Row is described as having a sweeter savour to the nostrils and a staid, respectable air. A man named Bramham dotted his initials thickly on a woman's card, having discovered at a little informal affair that she danced delightfully.
