About this book
W. W. Jacobs wrote The Toll-House. A character named Jack Barnes says that of course people have died in the house, and that people die in every house. Meagle describes a large house at an absurdly low rent, and says nobody will take it. Meagle says the house has taken toll of at least one life of every family that has lived there, however short the time. Barnes says he does not believe in ghosts nor in any supernatural things whatever, but admits that he should not care to pass a night there alone.
Barnes says he has had enough of this and keeps fancying that he hears things too, sounds of something moving about in the passage outside. Lester awoke in the morning to find the sunshine streaming into the room, and White sitting up and regarding with some perplexity a badly blistered finger.
