The Skylark of Space is a founding classic of the space-opera tradition, written by E. E. Smith and first published in 1928. When the brilliant chemist Richard Seaton stumbles on a strange metal that can unlock almost limitless power, he builds a spaceship, the Skylark, and is soon racing his unscrupulous rival across the galaxy at unimaginable speeds. Their chase leads to distant solar systems, alien civilisations, and battles on a scale no earlier writer had attempted. Crude and breathless by later standards, the book thrilled a generation of readers and opened up interstellar adventure as a whole new field for science fiction. About the Author
E. E. Smith (1890 to 1965), often called the father of space opera, was an American food chemist and science fiction writer. His Skylark and Lensman series set the pattern for the grand galactic adventure that dominated early science fiction.
