About this book

In a private office, DuQuesne warns Brookings that their ordinary attacks on Richard Seaton have become useless. Seaton and Crane possess technology learned on another world, and DuQuesne prepares for a space voyage that could keep him away for years. This opening gives E. E. Smith's 1930 novel its driving tension: scientific discovery continually changes the balance between rivals, while vast distances make every plan uncertain.

The scale widens on Dasor, a watery planet whose inhabitants value their home and need a greater supply of power. Seaton talks with Carfon about other planets, unfamiliar forces and the different needs of different civilizations. Technical explanations sit beside friendly conversation aboard the Skylark, giving the space adventure both machinery and personal exchanges. Readers interested in early science fiction can find ambitious inventions, interplanetary alliances and space warfare, along with an author's note explaining his approach to scientific speculation.
