Round about a Pound a Week is by Mrs. Pember Reeves. The preface acknowledges the use made of a manuscript written by Mrs. Charlotte Wilson, Hon. Secretary of the Fabian Women's Group. The preface thanks Dr. Ethel Bentham for the invaluable professional service rendered by her during the five years of the investigation. The text says a member of the committee who is a doctor interviewed each woman before the visits began, in order to ascertain if her health and her family history were such that a normal baby might be expected. The text says experience went to prove that married men in full work who keep their job on such a wage do not and cannot drink.
A household described has six children under thirteen, rent of 6s. 6d. for two rooms upstairs, and burial insurance of 1s. The text says that keeping the children of the nation in health and strength is too important and vital a responsibility to be placed entirely on one section of the community, the employers of labour, and that it should be undertaken by the State.
