About this book
Winds, waves and a rising flag give Eric Mackay's national ode its movement and sound. Across eight numbered sections, the speaker celebrates England through images of ships, stormy seas, green fields and a lark singing at dawn. The flag's blue, red and white become signs of duty and national honour, while references to Trafalgar, Waterloo, Nelson and Wellington connect the poem's declarations to remembered victories.
The verse repeatedly calls for the flag to be raised, building a public, ceremonial voice through rhyme, repetition and direct appeals. Its loyalty to the sovereign sits alongside a forceful belief in England's power at sea and abroad.
