About this book
English history takes the form of individual lyrical scenes in Francis Turner Palgrave's poems. His preface sets out an effort to bring historical research into verse while choosing people and events that lend themselves to poetry. The opening reaches back to Roman Britain, imagining the island's coast, forests, hill forts and successive inhabitants. England's landscape becomes a record of the generations that have shaped it, linking physical places with national memory.
A poem set in an Oxfordshire churchyard in September 1643 uses quiet graves and greenery to frame a reflection on Falkland and a divided state. From this peaceful setting, the verse turns toward the dangers of unchecked power and religious zeal. Palgrave's historical notes accompany the poems with explanations of his judgments. Readers interested in the meeting of poetry, politics and history can follow how a scene or figure becomes an argument about public responsibility.
