About this book

The Spoilt Child, subtitled A Tale of Hindu Domestic Life, is by Peary Chand Mitra. The text names G. D. Oswell, M.A., of the Court of Wards, Bengal, as translator. The preface says that the author's life was devoted to the good of his fellow-countrymen, and that he was especially eager in the cause of female education.

A son named Matilall, indulged in every possible way from his boyhood, was exceedingly self-willed, and would say to his father: Father, I want to catch hold of the moon! Matilall howled aloud, and scratched and bit his teacher on his very first visit to him. Baburam Babu, Thakchacha, Bakreswar Babu and Bancharam Babu were just getting into one of the numerous boats at the Vaidyabati Ghât when Beni Babu and Becharam Babu appeared.
