About this book

The Squirrels and Other Animals, or Illustrations of the Habits and Instincts of Many of the Smaller British Quadrupeds, is by George Waring. In Chapter I, a squirrel says one fine morning in early spring that he believes he has been asleep. The squirrel and his family are said to have fallen asleep at the first setting in of the cold weather and to have passed the dismal winter in a state of profound repose.

Gotobed, a cousin, cannot be made to hear, since a dormouse is a very sleepy little fellow indeed, even more so than a squirrel. A nest is made in a hole in the upper part of a very large oak-tree, lined with dry leaves and soft moss, and the hole holds a great heap of nuts, acorns, and beechmast. A speaker says that an unfortunate friend received the hearty congratulations of the community and was supplied with abundance of the most nourishing food they could collect.
