About this book

A boy with a house full of toys longs for the pleasures his neighbour makes for himself. Tommy Trot lives on a hill above Johnny Stout, whose homemade wagon, trained goats and sturdy sled seem more exciting than Tommy's many possessions. Their friendship grows on a snowy coasting hill, where Johnny offers Tommy a ride and confidently promises to look after him. Thomas Nelson Page's 1908 Christmas tale turns this everyday wish for companionship into a visit to Santa Claus's northern home.

Inside a palace of ice, the boys find busy little workers, heaps of presents and games among the bundles. Tommy also faces a pile of toys he has broken, before borrowed boots let him leap higher than he ever could at home. Fairy-tale inventions sit beside familiar concerns about sharing, waste and caring for others. The story offers young readers winter play and Christmas wonder through two boys with very different circumstances.
