About this book

The Story of a Mine is by Bret Harte. The dedication, signed Bret Harte and dated New York, December, 1877, is addressed to Udo Brachvogel, Esq. The contents list a Part II called In the Courts and a Part III called In Congress.

Chapter I, called Who Sought It, describes a steep trail leading over the Monterey Coast Range, where Concho is very tired, very dusty and very much disgusted. A character named Concho says "It is the camp" when a thin ghost-like stream of smoke seemed to be steadily drawn by invisible hands into the invisible ether. A passage about the stranger, left to himself, describes him as a vagabond by birth and education, a swindler by profession, an outcast by reputation.
